  • Dear Deb:
I am so very sorry for your loss. I just found out today from John. Bill was such a very special and kind man, a great friend and amazing chef! I’ll never forget our trips to Block Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and the Cape. I will especially remember the pinch hitter’s course he taught me, along with that very scary ride in the Varga Kachina, complete with short field take off and stall! He was ever so patient with me....
    Sending hugs and love,

Dolores Gilbertie (formerly Vitka), 18 August 2019

  • I first met Bill in 1979 and got my instrument rating with him.

Bill was a nice fellow and a good pilot.

  • My sincere condolences to you Debbie and family, this is so shocking. I will miss seeing him and him telling all his funny jokes on my Sat. shift at the Windsock, one of a kind man. May he fly with all the other angels and be yours as well, prayers to you all at this very difficult time. RIP Bill, until we meet again

  • Bill checked me out as an instructor at Carney Aviation in 1990. He remarked that I was very proficient. From him, that meant a lot.

I instructed there until 2001. I found the Grumman airplanes delightful, and I loved teaching and renting them for personal trips. For a long time I flew Grummans and only Grummans.

I remember him saying that his original occupation was fixing typewriters. Then a dying breed, he opted for a new career in aviation.

My experience with Bill was that he was a warm, humble, humorous guy who was very approachable as a boss. He knew a lot about flying, and was always happy to share what he knew.

I have very fond memories of Bill, and his passing is deeply saddening. On the plus side, I had the privilege of knowing and flying with him during one of the happiest periods of my life. I will always be grateful for that.

  • Uncle Bee was someone that I always looked up to..He taught me how to ski when I was young and took me skiing many times. I also remember flying with him, which he loved doing. I still remember you and him getting married up in Vermont and the beautiful wedding we all attended. I always enjoyed going to your home around New Years with my parents and Mimi and enjoying those fabulous dinners with the different wines to go with each course. It is because of the two of you that I gained the love of skiing, traveling, amazing food and wine. I have so many wonderful memories of him and the times I spent with both you and him when I was growing up. He will be missed tremendously. Sending you all my love..

  • Deb, I am so very sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. He was a wonderful supporter of equine activities in our area and I’m so glad I got to spend time with you both doing what we all love - be around and ride horses. His enthusiasm and smile will be missed in both the Bethany & Middlebury trail groups. Pam Hutchinson

  • We will miss breaking bread with such a connoisseur of food and fine wine and the Sailing on a vacation of a lifetime in Tortola BVI. Fly and Sail on Mr Peepers, you will be Missed but Never forgotten in our hearts until we meet again on the oceans of the Skys of Heaven.

  • Dear Deb and family,
Bill was my flight instructor and friend for 30 years. He was one of the funniest and intelligent people I ever knew. Deb, you were the best wife and friend and Bill adored you. He will be greatly missed and thought of often. My love and condolences go out to you.

  • “Uncle” Bill was my godfather. I will never forget the stories he told me of being a pilot and getting to watch his slides shows from his travels with Deb. As a kid I loved seeing the shots of the beautiful brightly colored fish when he went scuba diving. I always thought I had the coolest godfather who was always on adventures! Deb, we will be keeping you in our prayers. Sending you love & hugs.
