Obituary for Paul D. Bienkowski

Born: Derby
Lived: Shelton

Paul D. Bienkowski, age 61, of Shelton, entered into rest on Tuesday October 1, 2019 in Yale
New Haven Hospital. Paul was born in Derby on August 30, 1958, son of the late Chester and Josephine (Kozlowski) Bienkowski, and has been a Shelton resident for most of his life.
He attended Graham Junior College in Boston. While he was home he suffered a serious accident when he was in his 20’s becoming a paraplegic. After a long recovery he graduated in 1982 from Waterbury State Technical College with an associate’s degree in electrical engineering. He joined the University of New Haven in 1986 as a laboratory supervisor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Soon after joining UNH his talents in the field of electronics became obvious to faculty and students. He not only managed the labs in the department but he became a mentor for hundreds of students over the years. Paul was a strong proponent of engineering education and had a strong appetite to solve problems. He loved to interact and share his knowledge with the students on campus. He became involved in the Tour de Sol which was the Departments entry into an electrical vehicle competition and travelled down the east coast with the team.
In 2002 Paul started working with the department chair on the Project Lead the Way program (a pre-
engineering program for high schools). Once he learned that PLTW will help educate young high school
students in the field of engineering, he latched on to it as if this was his god given mission. He was a
tremendous force in getting this program off the ground. He also truly enjoyed doing it. He worked at the
University until March 2009. Paul was a brilliant man, an avid reader, an electrical hobbyist, loved art, and
loved fine food.
After his retirement Paul began to paint and became an accomplished artist, taking after his father Chester.
He is the beloved brother of Ronald Bienkowski and his wife Gloria, and Thomas Bienkowski and his wife Maggie and the cherished uncle of Ryan and John Bienkowski.
