Born: York, PA
Lived: Seymour

Joan Bernardo, age 81 of Seymour, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the Griffin Hospital. She was the devoted wife of 60 years to Dominic Bernardo. Joan was born in York, PA on December 19, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Raymond and Evelyn (Nelson) Koller.

Joan loved to crochet and would create extraordinary baby clothes (especially baby sweaters that she designed herself), afghans, scarves, and blankets. She cared very much about animal welfare, and she would design and create blankets that she would donate to veterinary offices in order to help comfort pets that had to be away from home, or for those in shelters. Everyone looked forward to her newest creation. She adored with all her heart, her grandsons and her new great-grandson. She shared a deeply close relationship with both of her children and both sons-in-law. She was a vibrant and caring spirit that brightened the lives of so many. She was a kind, loving and generous person, and she will be terribly missed by all that knew her.

She is the beloved mother of Kim Chiarella and her husband Tom, Keith Bernardo and his husband Rob Farrell, loving grandmother of Thomas Chiarella, Jr and his partner Haley Grant, Stephen Chiarella, Daniel Chiarella, and proud great-grandmother of Nolan Kai Chiarella.
Joan’s service will be private. Memorial contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd, Newington, CT 06111. The Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
